Warwick plays key role in new NHS patient experience guidelines

A University of Warwick researcher has played a key role in shaping the new NICE quality standard and guidance on patient experience in adult NHS Services.

Sophie Staniszewska from the Department of Health and Social Sciences at the University of Warwick chaired the Patient Experience Guidance Development Group.

The guidance and quality standard has been produced by the National Clinical Guideline Centre and was published by NICE last week. The focus of the guidance is on core areas affecting patient experience such as staff/patient interaction.

The recommendations include:

· Knowing the patient as an individual

· Essential requirements of care

· Tailoring healthcare services for each patient

· Continuity of care and relationships

· Enabling patients to actively participate in their care

Staniszewska said: “The guidance represents a landmark in the development of patient-centred care. Drawing on evidence and on their own experiences, the guidance development group identified the key components of care that contribute to a good experience.”
