Stanford junior Torri Huske claimed her first career Olympic gold in the 100 butterfly on Sunday, bringing the total number of medals earned by Cardinal athletes on opening weekend to six. Catch up on the latest news from Paris.
After missing the podium by one-hundredth of a second in Tokyo, Torri Huske stood on the top step in Paris as she claimed her first Olympic gold with a 55.59 in the 100 butterfly.
Touching the wall third at the halfway mark, Huske stormed back with a 29.98 split in the final 50 meters to chase down American teammate Gretchen Walsh and secure the win. Walsh would take silver to give the United States a 1-2 finish in the event.
Huske becomes the 17th different individual in program history to win an Olympic gold medal and just the second Stanford swimmer to win gold in the 100 butterfly, joining 1964 gold medalist Sharon Stouder Clark.
It is Huske’s second medal in as many days at the Paris Olympics, winning silver in the 4x100 freestyle relay on Saturday alongside Cardinal alum Simone Manuel. She now has three career Olympic medals, also earning silver in Tokyo as a member of the American 4x100 medley relay team.
The Cardinal junior will continue her Olympic run with the 100 free on Tuesday morning, with the opportunity to compete in the 4x100 medley relay later in the week.
