Ranked 76th worldwide, 13th in the EU

The University of Bonn is among the top four universities in Germany, according to the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), which has just been published. It is ranked 13th among the best universities in the European Union and 76th among the top universities in the world. In a global comparison, Bonn thus improved by eight places compared to the previous year. In the European Union, the university of excellence moved up five places.

The University of Bonn was again able to improve its ranking in the "Shanghai Ranking". In the German comparison, it was able to maintain fourth place - after the two Munich universities and Heidelberg. The four universities of excellence are the only German universities among the top 100 in the world.

However, the field of four German universities in the top 100 has become more crowded: The Technical University of Munich (TUM), Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) and the University of Heidelberg have dropped several places compared to last year, while the University of Bonn has moved up eight places. Following Bonn by a wide margin is the University of Freiburg in rankings 101’150 .

In four of the six ranking indicators, the University of Bonn is in the German top 5 and has also improved in two indicators that deal with the most cited researchers (Highly Cited Researchers) and publications in the high-ranking journals Nature and Science. In the alumni indicator, the Bonn alma mater benefits from the fact that Prof. Maryna Viazovska, who received her doctorate from the University of Bonn in 2013, was awarded the Fields Medal this year, the highest scientific award in mathematics.

The focus of the "Shanghai Ranking," which has been published annually since 2003, is on research. 1,000 universities are evaluated on six indicators, which include scientific publications and citations, as well as high-ranking awards such as Nobel Prizes or Fields Medals.

Outstanding position further improved

"The ranking shows once again that the University of Excellence Bonn is one of the strongest universities in Europe and the world. In Germany alone, we are one of only four universities at all in the top 100," explains the Rector of the University of Bonn, Dr. h.c. Michael Hoch. "An analysis that is all the more remarkable because we have not only been able to further establish our very good position in the face of tough international competition, but have even been able to significantly improve it once again. We are very pleased that our strategy for the future has been successfully confirmed, which we will continue to implement and develop together with all members of the university."

The University of Bonn is the most successful German university in the Excellence Competition: no other university has been able to achieve six clusters of excellence and the status of University of Excellence at the same time.
