The University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland includes nine schools with more than 12’000 students. We are looking for you to join the Academy of Art and Design, Institute of Experimental Design and Media Cultures, from 15 March 2020 in Basel, Switzerland: PhD Researcher Political Ecologies of Planetary Metabolisms and Transformations.

Description

Your tasks: In this position you work in a new SNSF project at the FHNW Academy of Art and Design in Basel, within the Institute of Experimental Design and Media Cultures’ Critical Media Lab which combines academic and media lab environments. The project “Cycles of Circulation” investigates ecological relations in times of climate crisis, critically evaluating the harmonious model of the ‘cycle’ in Western contexts and in China. The position offers an opportunity to work with a highly interdisciplinary, dynamic and practice-based scholarly research team, focusing on topics of ecology, media, technology and politics covering historical and contemporary art and media, cross-cultural, climate science and environmental humanities studies. The position is limited until 14 March 2023.

Requirements

Your profile: You have already done academic work in various branches of political ecology and histories. Interdisciplinary experience and a desire to broaden research methods and focus are very welcome. A background in science and technology studies, environmental humanities and human geography, political science or economics is a plus. Specializations may include, but are not limited to: environmental STS such as climate change, environmental governance, sustainability, the Anthropocene, non-Western approaches to political science, the politics of science and STS, law, science and technology, technoscience and capitalism. Particular emphasis and preference will be given if you have experience or interest in the analysis of historical and contemporary dynamics of ecological governance and environmental regulatory structures, bodies, organizations and actors. FHNW strongly encourages applications by women.
