The University of Alberta’s Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry (FoMD) is inviting applications for a full time position as Department Chair, Psychiatry. Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the faculty has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 100 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions. 

The Department of Psychiatry offers well-established training programs in postgraduate medical education and separate MSc and PhD Degrees. Recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in neurochemistry, neuroimaging, and neuropsychopharmacology research. The department has access to impressive research facilities and has a strong funding record. The Department is supported by an Academic Medicine & Health Services Program (AMHSP). 

The University of Alberta is committed to fostering education and research within the department and as such, the faculty is seeking a strong leader who will further develop the Department of Psychiatry through the engagement of faculty members and the enhancement of collaboration with a continuing focus in excellent patient care, research and education. 

The successful candidate will be a visionary and strategic leader with a proven track record of success in inspiring excellence and engaging faculty, a record of personal academic accomplishment and excellent interpersonal skills, as well as innovative ideas on how to meet the opportunities of academic, research and clinical service leadership in an integrated health region. Current tenured Academic faculty in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, University of Alberta, with a PhD or MD are eligible to apply.

For candidates external to the University of Alberta they must have a MD/PhD or MD to provide clinical care in a manner that meets the expectations of both the University and Alberta Health Services (AHS). The successful candidate will be offered a contingent tenure-track appointment and a concurrent clinical appointment with AHS. The external candidate must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta have obtained the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Specialty Certification in Psychiatry or equivalent and must be eligible to work in Canada. If the preferred candidate is external to Edmonton, an AHS committee will meet with the candidate to review the acceptability of licensure, clinical qualifications, and team fit to best support appointment and site privileging with AHS. FoMD and AHS work in close partnership with the unique advantage of scaling up academic, educational and research objectives that are integrated into Edmonton Zone AHS clinical service delivery. 

The Department Chair will report to the Dean of Medicine. Remuneration for this position is based on the Academic Medicine & Health Services Program (AMHSP). Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

AHS is Canada’s first and largest province-wide system responsible for delivering health services to the over four million people living in Alberta, as well as to some residents of Saskatchewan, B.C. and the Northwest Territories. AHS has recently been identified as being one of the top five most integrated health systems in the world.  AHS has over 110,000 employees and is supported by over 14,300 volunteers and almost 10,300 physicians practicing in Alberta. AHS operates the University of Alberta Hospital, the Royal Alexandra Hospital, seven suburban hospitals within the greater Edmonton Area and collaborates with two facilities operated by Covenant Health (the Grey Nuns and Misericordia Community Hospitals)

The ideal candidate for this important role will possess the following skills, attributes and experience:

  • MD with relevant clinical qualifications, skills and eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta (external candidates); or current academic faculty in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry with a PhD (or equivalent)  or MD;
  • Understanding and support of a comprehensive clinical care model / patient-centered care; 
  • Demonstrated engagement, collaboration, and building of transforming teams and networks among stakeholders;
  • Ability to develop an enhanced research capacity through their national / international reputation and network; 
  • Broad knowledge of issues and opportunities in psychiatric education; 
  • Demonstrated leadership in professional organizations dedicated to medical education; and
  • The successful candidate will be offered a contingent tenure-track appointment at the level of Associate or Full Professor depending on background and a concurrent clinical appointment with AHS.
