About us

The Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (Bundesamt für die Sicherheit der nuklearen Entsorgung, BASE) is a federal regulatory, supervisory and licensing authority for all nuclear safety issues. As the federal government’s nuclear supervisory authority, we monitor and control the federal company for radioactive waste disposal (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH) and their nuclear and radiation protection projects and activities for the construction, operation and subsequent closure of the Morsleben repository for radioactive waste, the Konrad repository (currently under construction) and the Asse II mine. We are also responsible for overseeing the search for a site for a repository for high-level radioactive waste in Germany and organising public participation for this purpose. As an independent higher federal authority, BASE is part of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Naturschutz und nukleare Sicherheit, BMU).

Description

  • Lead BASE’s largest specialist department, which consists of several subject areas, manage multiple department heads and their teams.
  • Supervise the construction, operation and subsequent closure of the Konrad and Morsleben repositories as well as of the Asse II mine.
  • Track and evaluate the respective approval and system statuses.
  • Inspect on-site facilities.
  • Design the content-related, personnel and organisational development of the federal nuclear supervision of repository projects through using modern management methodologies and techniques.
  • Represent BASE publicly as well as in national and international committees.

Requirements

  • An academic degree (master’s degree or university diploma) in a relevant subject.
  • 2+ years of leadership experience leading a team of at least 8 direct reports. In this position, you were also responsible for the day-to-day management and career development of your team members.
  • Available for business travel.
  • An excellent command of English (verbal and written).

Ideally, you will also have

  • Knowledge in the field of nuclear waste disposal.
  • Administrative experience, preferably in a supervising role.
  • Project and change management experience.
  • Analytic ability to interconnect various and complex technical, legal and social aspects.
  • A high degree of resilience, independence and assertiveness.


The willingness to be checked according to the Security Clearance Check Act (SÜG) is a prerequisite.
