Salary: £35,326 to £40,927
Closing Date: Wednesday 20 October 2021
Interview Date: To be confirmed

The research associate will collaborate with the Principal Investigator, Professor Andrey Lazarev, on several areas of the EPSRC supported project on "Rank functions on triangulated categories, homotopy theory and representations of finite groups”. It is linked with the project led by Professor Joseph Chuang (City University London) having the same title; close collaboration and frequent visits to City University are planned within the framework of both projects.

The area of the proposed research is homological and homotopical algebra; it has connections with algebraic topology, noncommutative ring theory, and representation theory. The main theme is the application of the techniques and philosophy of derived localization to a wide variety of problems in homotopy theory, noncommutative geometry and representation theory. More specific goals include an extension of the notion of a Sylvester rank function in a homotopy invariant way, developing an analogue of the Cohn-Schofield theory based on this notion, constructing derived fields of fractions of noncommutative rings, and exploring relationships with Bridgeland’s spaces of stability conditions.

Lancaster University has a thriving and growing pure mathematics section with eleven staff in the algebra and geometry group, including three professors, one reader, five senior lecturers and two lecturers. Other areas of research in pure mathematics include analysis and probability and geometric rigidity theory.

You should have, or be close to completing, a PhD in Pure Mathematics. Preference will be given to the following areas of specialisation: homological and homotopical algebra, algebraic topology, algebraic and noncommutative geometry, category theory, representation theory. Informal enquiries can be addressed to Professor Andrey Lazarev (a.lazarevlancaster.ac.uk).

You will join us on an indefinite contract however, the role remains contingent on external funding which, at this time is until 30 November 2023

The post is available from 1 November 2021 or at a mutually agreed later date. Applications are welcome from all diversity groups.
