The University System Office seeks a Visiting Research Software Engineer. The Discovery Partners Institute at the University of Illinois System seeks an experienced software development engineer to support the advancement of applied research and development initiatives and projects. Led by the University of Illinois System in partnership with local and global research universities, DPI does three things: tech talent development, applied R&D, and creating new businesses. DPI builds science teams and helps them to identify and pursue new funding opportunities. These multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional teams pursue funding opportunities from federal agencies, private foundations, industry, and other sources for projects ranging from research to proofs-of-concept to application and evaluation.

DPI invites nominations and applications for the position of Visiting Research Software Engineer. Visiting Research Software Engineer will work cross-functionally and cross-organizationally to leverage the strengths of the academic programs and faculty from the University of Illinois campuses and DPI partner institutions to design, build, launch, iterate and improve technology-based products and services.

Additional responsibilities include:

  1. Build user interfaces that are interactive, consistent and fast, that thrive under heavy customization and varying use cases, that encourage exploration, and that earn the trust of our customers through reliable, accessible and thoughtful interactions.
  2. Connect the dots between project needs, innovation, and good design
  3. Provides programming and support in the development and customization of web-based computer applications and databases.
  4. Codes solutions to problems using a structured approach, keeping in mind long-term maintainability and accessibility.
  5. Tests coded solutions properly to ensure a quality application. Works with end-users during and after development to ensure needs are met.
  6. Provides support and training to other technical teams, empowering them to train their team members on using web-based tools.
  7. Collaborates with Digital Experience and Analysis team members and interfaces with Information Services and third-party product support to ensure that servers and applications run smoothly and efficiently.


  1. Bachelor’s degree in computer science or relevant field or equivalent work experience
  2. Work experience as a Senior Web Developer
  3. Expertise with modern front-end programming languages
  4. Solid knowledge of HTML/CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, and other JavaScript frameworks
  5. Experience with mockup and UI prototyping tools
  6. Understanding of security practices
