The research groups of Profs. Copéret and Müller (ETH Zürich; and ?" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"> ) are looking for an excellent candidate to fill a joint PhD position that is funded by Innosuisse.

Project background

The project explores metal oxide-based catalysts for the hydrogenation of CO2 to higher alcohols with attention to both catalyst development and characterization. The ultimate goal of the project, in collaboration with further industrial and academic partners is the establishment and demonstration of an efficient process for the conversion of CO2 into higher alcohols while keeping the number of reaction steps to a minimum.

Job description

The PhD candidate participating in this research projects is expected to develop both practical and model catalysts with a well-defined atomic structure, morphology and composition. Besides their activity, selectivity and stability under CO2 hydrogenation conditions, their bulk and surface structures shall be mapped out utilizing a broad portfolio of characterization methods, including XAS, XRD, IR, NMR and Raman spectroscopy, when possible under in situ/operando conditions.

Your profile

Applicants for this PhD position are expected to have an excellent MSc degree in Chemical Engineering, Material Science or Chemistry. Experience in the field of material synthesis and/or material characterization is important and highly valued. We are looking for highly motivated, committed, and creative individuals, able to work in a team and with outstanding communication skills. Working in a top-level research environment with advanced laboratory infrastructure, the candidate will have a unique opportunity to develop their research abilities. The positions are available from April 2022 onwards.
