Scientist in Microbial Genomics & Bioinformatics

The research group Molecular Ecology deals with the promising field of agri-genomics and investigates, among other things, by means of microbial genomics/bioinformatics methods, the composition and utilization of microbiomes relevant to agriculture and food and their important representatives (in soil, plants, fermented foods), e.g. in the field of biocontrol and the reduction of the use of plant protection products.

Description

  • De novo genome assembly of NGS data from various technologies (Illumina, PacBio, Oxford Nanopore Technologies) as well as genome annotation of microorganisms (bacteria, yeasts, fungi).
  • Comparative genomics analyses to identify core, accessory, and strain-specific genes of the isolated strains compared to already known strains.
  • Data analysis of RNA-Seq and other OMICS data (differential gene expression analysis to identify relevant candidate genes), pathway and gene set enrichment analyses.
  • Integrative data analysis and data mining, e.g., to decipher potential mechanisms of action.
  • Presentation of results in publications and at conferences, generation of scientific reports.
  • Expansion/maintenance of existing analysis pipelines (genome assembly, transcriptome analyses, etc.).
  • Acquisition of third-party funds; deputy team leader.

Requirements

  • Scientist (MSc degree) with PhD in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology (ideally PostDoc experience).
  • Proven experience in the analysis and integration of functional genomics data (genome assembly, comparative genomics, RNA-Seq, other OMICS data, pathway analysis, deciphering potential mechanisms of action).
  • Execution/management of collaborative research projects as well as acquisition of external funding.
  • Relevant programming experience (Python, Linux scripting/bash, R, Java).
  • Knowledge of metagenomics data analysis is desired.
  • Motivated, high-performing personality with strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of two official Swiss languages
