Position Description

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is an integral component of the UW School of Medicine and shares UW Medicine’s mission to ’Improve the Health of the Public.’ We accomplish this by providing the best care we can today, conducting research to develop better treatments for tomorrow, and inspiring and training the next generation of health care professionals for the Pacific Northwest. Our department is the third largest within the School of Medicine with an annual operating budget in excess of $100 M and a research budget of approximately $50M.

As the only academic psychiatry department serving Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho, we are committed to improving access to psychiatric care and consultation throughout the greater Pacific Northwest. Our educational programs include a required medical student clerkship for 260 medical students per year at some 30 sites across the WWAMI region, a nationally competitive psychiatry residency program with more than 90 psychiatry residents in Seattle and in two regional residency tracks in Idaho and Montana, subspecialty fellowships in addiction, child and adolescent, consultation-liaison, perinatal mental health and geriatric psychiatry, a nationally renowned scientist-practitioner psychology internship program, and numerous post-doctoral clinical and research fellowships.

UW Medicine Garvey Institute of Brain Health Solutions The mission of the Garvey Institute for Brain Health Solutions (GIBHS) at UW Medicine is to improve the health for the millions of people at risk for and affected by mental health, substance use and other brain health disorders. Founded with a $50 million gift by local philanthropists Lynn and Mike Garvey, we develop, test and rapidly deploy innovative approaches to prevent and treat brain health and mental health problems such as anxiety and depression, schizophrenia, addiction, dementia and suicide. UWMC Behavioral Health Teaching Facility The University of Washington Medical Center, with funding from the Washington State Legislature, is building a Behavioral Health Teaching facility that will open in the fall of 2023. This facility will house a Center for Neuromodulation that will serve both inpatients and outpatients. The Center for Neuromodulation will allow for multiple ECT teams, multiple TMS machines, and clinical space for use in innovative neuromodulation and therapeutics research. In addition, the Behavioral Health Teaching Facility will have 100 psychiatry beds, 50 Med/Surg beds, and a psychiatry observation unit. This facility will afford an opportunity to develop a new, cross-disciplinary program to evaluate and implement novel mental health treatment modalities. There will also opportunities to mentor and develop interprofessional personal with regards to technology and research, as well as to develop training programs on the use of emerging clinical interventions.

In partnership with the UW Medicine Garvey Institute for Brain Health Solutions, the Department is seeking candidates for one full-time faculty position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor without tenure by reason of funding (WOT), which will hold the inaugural Garvey Family Endowed Professorship in Technology and Brain Health. Associate and Full Professors are eligible for multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. The anticipated start date for this position is Summer 2022.

The holder of this position will have the opportunity to collaborate in innovative research and develop clinical services at one of the nation’s top academic institutions. Opportunities will include working in partnership with a large and diverse faculty from many disciplines, including internationally respected leaders in the basic, clinical, public health and technological sciences. The incumbent will be responsible for demonstrating leadership in and providing excellent clinical care. The ideal context for an emerging, productive, and visionary scholar, this Endowed Professorship will provide a platform for high impact contributions to research, policy, and teaching in this rapidly growing field. The incumbent will work in collaboration with the Director of the Garvey Institute for Brain Health Solutions to support the Institute’s activities in this area. This position will be expected to work with a diverse student, faculty, and community population. Qualifications

Applicants must have an M.D. or D.O. or foreign equivalent and have current medical licensure, eligibility for a Washington State medical license, and eligibility for an appropriate medical staff appointment.

In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
