UW Continuum College (UWC2) has an outstanding opportunity for a part-time instructor for the Professional and Continuing Education (PCE) Certificate in Wetland Science & Management , specifically for the Wetland Law & Policy course which is taught in winter quarter. Instructors serve a key role in certificate programs, engaging with students, serving as subject matter experts, presenting learning content, and assessing whether learners have achieved course competencies. PCE students consistently say that the instructor is the single most important element of their course.

Professional and Continuing Education Instructors...

• Teach to a set curriculum plan with clear learning outcomes and competencies
• Prepare a course syllabus in advance of the course start date (templates provided)
• Ensure that lesson plans and presentation materials for the full course are relevant and current
• Teach all class sessions at the scheduled time
• Respond to student inquiries and provide feedback on student assignments in a timely manner
• Coordinate with other instructors in the certificate program, to ensure curriculum continuity across courses
• Adapt instructional techniques based on feedback from students and the Program Manager, and implement sound pedagogical practices
• Complete instructor onboarding, relevant learning technology training, and other training as needed
• Observe FERPA, HIPAA, and other privacy laws and policies.
• Participate in 1-2 instructor meetings and information sessions per year

The instructor for Wetland Law & Policy will provide 3 hours of teaching in-person per week (course class time, Thursday evening), plus preparation time, and provision of student assessment and feedback. Preparation time includes readiness to use UW online platforms and learning technologies as needed. An approximate average of 6 hours total per week is expected for preparation and teaching activities. Additional time will be needed for student communications, team meetings and program staff consultations.

PCE courses are generally 10 weeks in duration and align with the UW academic quarter calendar. UWC2 Extension Lecturers / Instructors are Academic Staff, not faculty. This is a part-time, temporary position.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• A Bachelor’s degree in earth or environmental sciences, or environmental law & policy
• Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in a relevant discipline of environmental sciences and resource management that demonstrates an expert, applied level of knowledge in environmental law and policy
• Understanding of law & policy as it relates to aquatic systems, especially wetlands in WA state
• Current knowledge on emergent issues in wetland and environmental law and policy
• In-depth knowledge of the wetland permitting process in association with various government agencies and regulations
• Prior teaching experience
• Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
• Ability, and desire, to successfully work with individuals from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Willingness to teach with minimal supervision while maintaining high standards of professionalism, punctuality, and content relevance for diverse adult students
• Legal authorization to work and receive compensation in the United States

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• A graduate degree in an environmental law & policy discipline relevant to wetland science & management
• Experience teaching law and policy related to aquatic systems including wetlands
• Experience in environmental negotiation and conflict management
• Experience teaching adult learners
• Experience teaching/presenting in an online environment
