The Lucerne School of Computer Science and Information Technology is the first school in a Swiss university of applied sciences to be devoted to IT. The new Zug-Rotkreuz campus offers bachelor degree programmes in Digital Ideation, Computer Science, Information and Cyber Security, International IT Management and Business Information Technology and master’s degree programmes in Engineering and Business Information Technology. Rounding out the School’s offer are attractive continuing education courses and applied research and services. It is one of six Schools making up the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts with its 1800-plus staff and more than 11,500 degree and continuing education students.

The Immersive Realities Research Lab was established in 2018 and investigates how people use augmented and virtual reality technologies. The group focuses on the role of users in these contexts and studies new types of interactions. Current AR/VR projects include among others participatory design within urban planning projects, a serious game for beekeepers, a hybrid art exhibition, and tangible learning tools for teaching about electricity. All projects have in common strong interdisciplinarity and pursue the overall mission of facilitating understanding.

Research Engineer/Scientist in XR content creation technologies

(with PhD option)

eXtended Reality (XR) is among most interesting technology trends these days, and the potential is further increasing, driven by concepts like the metaverse. However, content creation for XR applications is still a task that requires expert knowledge and skills, as well as professional software and tools. The new European research project TransMIXR will address this challenge. TransMIXR aims to make XR content creation easier, more accessible, and more intuitive. With 19 international partners from all over Europe, the Immersive Realities Research Lab (IRRL) will develop new software tools, workflows and practices for XR content creation, and showcase these in dedicated pilots with partners from creative industries. We are looking for a Research Engineer/Scientist to join us in this project. While it is not a condition, we offer the opportunity to purse a PhD.

Description

  • Research on novel software tools, workflows, and practices for XR content creation
  • Implementation, optimization, and testing of corresponding solutions
  • Collaboration with international partners to integrate technologies
  • Collaboration with international partners to realize and evaluate use case pilots for creative industries
  • Regular international travel to project meetings
  • Publication of results in scientific papers
  • Contribution to technical reports and deliverables

Requirements

Qualifications (required)
  • MSc, PhD or equivalent in computer science, engineering or a related field
  • Strong programming skills
  • Experience with game engines such as Unity or Unreal
  • Strong communication skills in English
  • Enthusiasm for applied research and XR technologies
  • Ability to take responsibility and to work independently, as well as team player attitude

Qualifications (optional)
  • Experience/knowledge in the following areas:
  • XR technologies, hardware and software
  • XR content and application development
  • Media coding/streaming and related standards (MPEG, JPEG, etc.)
  • Computer graphics, XR and web formats (OpenXR, Web XR, USD, etc.)
  • Computer graphics and animation
  • Computer vision
  • Human computer interaction
