UW Continuum College (UWC2) has an outstanding opportunity for a part-time instructor for the Professional and Continuing Education (PCE) and Continuing Education (PCE), Certificate in Big Data Technologies, specifically for the second and third courses in the certificate series Big Data Technologies which are taught real-time online in the winter and spring. The Instructor plays a key role in our certificate programs, engaging with students, serving as a subject matter expert, presenting learning content, and assessing whether learners have achieved course competencies. Our students consistently tell us that the instructor is the single most important element of their course.

Professional and Continuing Education Instructors...

  • Teach to a set curriculum plan with clear learning outcomes and competencies
  • Prepare a course syllabus in advance of the course start date (templates provided)
  • Ensure that lesson plans and presentation materials for the full course are relevant and current
  • Teach all class sessions at the scheduled time
  • Respond to student inquiries and provide feedback on student assignments in a timely manner
  • Coordinate with other instructors in the certificate program, to ensure curriculum continuity across courses
  • Adapt instructional techniques based on feedback from students and the Program Manager, and implement sound pedagogical practices
  • Complete instructor onboarding, relevant learning technology training, and other training as needed
  • Observe FERPA, HIPAA, and other privacy laws and policies.
  • Participate in 1-2 instructor meetings and information sessions per year


In collaboration with a co-instructor, the instructor for Big Data Technologies will provide 3 hours of online teaching per week (course class time), plus preparation time, and provision of student assessment and feedback. Preparation time includes readiness to use UW online platforms and learning technologies. An approximate average of 6 hours total per week is expected for preparation and teaching activities. Additional time will be needed for student communications, team meetings and program staff consultations.

PCE courses are generally 10 weeks in duration and align with the UW academic quarter calendar. UWC2 Extension Lecturers / Instructors are Academic Staff, not faculty. This is a part-time, temporary position.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum three years of professional experience related to big data technologies.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Ability, and desire, to work with individuals from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Willingness to teach with minimal supervision while maintaining high standards of professionalism, punctuality, and content relevance for diverse adult students
  • Legal authorization to work and receive compensation in the United States


Desired Qualifications

  • Prior teaching or mentoring experience, particularly with adult learners
  • Prior experience teaching/presenting in an online learning environment
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in relevant field
  • Proficiency in the following technologies explored in this certificate:
    • Essentials of computer systems as relevant to performance, design and operation of big data systems: machine architecture, distributed computing basics, the cloud
    • Functional programming basics as relevant for big data
    • The Hadoop ecosystem: Hadoop MapReduce, HDFS, HBase, Hive
    • The Spark Ecosystem: Spark, Spark SQL, GraphX, GraphFrames
    • NoSQL: ideas and context, example systems including HBase and Cassandra
    • Data Pipelines and Platforms
    • Modernizing the Data Warehouse, Data Lakes and Delta Lake
    • Processing streaming data: Unified Log Model, Kafka
    • Data platform production considerations
