Assistant professorship with tenure track to an associate professorship (AoP) or associate professorship (AoP)

The ARTORG Center for Biomedical Engineering Research is a world leading translational research institute embedded in the Medical Faculty of the University of Bern, and host to the Center for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine. Its mission statement is to conceive, design, and validate new engineering solutions to solve unmet clinical needs. With a strong focus on translation, the Center has an outstanding track record of expanding the state-of-the-art of Biomedical Engineering research and launching new commercial ventures into the healthcare ecosystem.

To strengthen the research portfolio of surgical robotics and mechatronics, the Medical Faculty of the University of Bern invites applications for an assistant professor (with tenure track to extraordinary professor) for Medical Mechatronics and Surgical Robotics for Neurosurgery. The position is to be established between the ARTORG Center and the Department of Neurosurgery (Bern University Hospital).

Description

The successful candidate must bring a proven track record in research and clinical translation in surgical technologies, surgical robotics, and instruments. The candidate’s focus is expected to be translating next generation surgical robotic technology for neurosurgical applications all the way to clinical application. The candidate is expected to

  • address unmet clinical needs for patient benefit,
  • pursue solution-oriented research and development in relevant applications,
  • conduct early phase clinical research at appropriate development stages,
  • incorporate systematic regulatory activities to facilitate compliant clinical investigation,
  • seek-out targeted technology co-operation with pertinent industry partners,
  • facilitate commercial exploitation through an entrepreneurial mindset and vision.

Requirements

Candidates should hold a PhD in engineering, physics, computer science or other related areas, ideally have 3 – 5 years of postdoctoral and independent research experience and are expected to initiate and establish an internationally competitive research group. Acquiring third-party funding and collaboration with industrial partners is key as the aim is to build an integrated, multidisciplinary research laboratory committed to developing and translating novel medical applications, products or services into clinical care and the healthcare marketplace. The appointee will be expected to teach graduate level courses within the University’s Biomedical Engineering and Artificial Intelligence in Medicine Master’s programs.
