80%-100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC) is a joint venture between EPFL and ETH Zurich. Its mission is to accelerate the adoption of data science and machine learning techniques within the ETH Domain academic disciplines, the Swiss academic community at large, and the industrial sector. In particular, it addresses the gap between those who create data, those who develop data analytics and systems, and those who could potentially extract value from it. The centre comprises a multi-disciplinary team of data and computer scientists, and experts in select domains with offices in Zürich, Lausanne, and Villigen.

Project background

The Renku platform is developed at the SDSC to encourage collaboration, sharing and best practices in data analysis projects. Renku is used at academic institutions in Switzerland and internationally as well as in the private and public sectors. Renku is developed by a team of 15 from 12 different countries, and we are committed to upholding the team's diversity in the future.

Job description

We are looking for creative front-end developers to enrich our Renku platform team . In this role, you will be tasked with taking ideas for the UI, fleshing out the visual presentation according to our design system, and guiding them to implementation. Ideas may be delivered as mock-ups, wireframes, sketches, or maybe just textual descriptions, and you will need to apply your design experience and sensibilities to give them a crisp visual presentation that combines layout and tasteful use of colour, potentially creating some graphics along the way.

Your profile

  • You are a designer with programming experience or developer with demonstrable graphic-design experience
  • You take pride in developing beautiful user interfaces
  • You are knowledgable about HTML and CSS and have experience leveraging CSS to realize layouts and visual effects
  • You have experience programming in JavaScript
  • Experience with React and TypeScript are pluses, but not requirements
  • A portfolio showcasing previous projects is also a plus
  • Beyond specific skills, we are interested in individuals who are eager to learn, are self-motivated and love working on a team.

Interested in building tools that will improve the reproducibility and reusability of data-driven discovery? Come join our team building the Renku platform!

We offer

  • a stimulating, collaborative, cross-disciplinary environment in a world-class research institution.
  • a commitment towards a great work-life balance; we will readily consider part-time employment as well as home-office work.
  • flexible work hours and uncomplicated holiday scheduling.
  • a workplace that encourages experimentation and creativity by actively promoting learning about new technologies and approaches on the job.
  • an open-source-friendly setting where team members are free to engage with and contribute to open-source communities as a part of the development process.
