The Integrated Devices, Electronics, And Systems (IDEAS) Group of ETH Zurich invite applications for a postdoctoral associate position in the next-generation cellular and molecular bioelectronics research with a focus on the biology-electronics interface design, postprocessing, and experimental testing.

The ETH IDEAS Group is a world-leading research group in integrated bioelectronics ( ). We are strongly involved in the research of CMOS-cellular multi-modal bidirectional interface (sensing and actuation), CMOS molecular electronics, high-throughput cellular/molecular screening, multi-organ-on-a-chip, drug testing platforms, and implantable devices for theranostics. Our past postdoc members and doctoral students have found excellent jobs in top universities and industries.

This postdoc position lasts a minimum of two years, possibly extending to the third year.

Project background

Modern biotechnologies use living cells or molecules as tools or organic “biological front-end layers” to interface with physical environments for sensing, actuation, material synthesis, and energy harvesting. Integrated electronics, as an inorganic “semiconductor back-end layer,” offer cellular/molecular feature sizes at nanometers, versatile sensing/actuation modalities, and massive abilities to compute, store, and communicate information. Our research focuses on merging these two organic/inorganic layers and opening the door to novel hybrid biotic/abiotic systems.

The overarching aim of the project is to explore the interplay of nano-electronics and biology to revolutionize our capabilities of sensing, actuation, and manipulation of molecules, cells, and tissues and further our scientific understanding.

This postdoc position is jointly funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and ETH Zurich's internal funding. The research involves close collaborations with biology and biomedical engineering groups at ETH Zurich, EPFL, Harvard University Medical School, and Emory University.

Job description

You will be responsible for the design, fabrication, and testing of the interfaces on bioelectronics integrated circuit (IC) chips for next-generation cellular and molecular sensing, actuation, and manipulation. The research primarily focuses on in-house clean-room post-processing of CMOS bioelectronics ICs at both die-level and wafer-level, including but not limited to on-CMOS 2D/3D electronics, surface passivation, surface functionalization, and IC-microfluidics co-designs. You will also be responsible for performing IC chip packaging and leading bio-experiments. As this is a highly interdisciplinary project, this position also involves close collaborations with researchers within Switzerland and worldwide.

Your profile

- PhD in relevant fields, such as Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Chemistry

- A strong research and publication track record in functional interface designs for biosensors and bioelectronics

- Expertise in mammalian cell culture and/or bacteria culture

- Expertise in cleanroom fabrication and post-processing on CMOS IC chips at die-level and wafer-level

- Knowledge and experience in electrochemistry

- Experience with bioelectronics IC packagings, such as wire-bonding and microfluidics. 3D bio-printing experience is a plus.

- Experience with bioelectronics experiments with cellular or molecular samples

- Skills in data analytical tools. Basic knowledge of machine learning is a plus.

- Independent individual who can both craft new projects and work collaboratively to achieve large-scale scientific goals

- Excellent communication skills in English

- Willingness to learn new methods
