The laboratory gathers more than 10 academics and their respective research groups. We maintain strong collaborations with colleagues at EPS’s Institute for Physics and Quantum Sciences, and with the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences. Detailed Description

SIPLab welcomes applications from outstanding self-motivated individuals developing world-leading research at the interface of imaging and computation sciences, ranging from computational imaging, to image processing, analysis, and visualisation.

We seek candidates with expertise ranging from theory and algorithms (machine learning, optimisation, statistical methods, graph-based methods, etc.), to techniques (coded-aperture, aperture synthesis, multi-model fusion, compressive sensing, etc.) and imaging applications throughout science and technology (medical imaging, astronomical imaging, remote sensing, computational photography, quantum imaging, etc.), to extreme imaging modalities (extreme scale, low resource, extreme environments, etc.), also including the interface with high-performance computing hardware and software technologies.

The successful applicant will develop cutting-edge research and establish collaborations within SIPLab, Heriot-Watt, Edinburgh’s Data-Driven Innovation hubs, as well as at national and international levels. There will be a requirement to demonstrate leadership and initiative, with a view to building a research team and becoming internationally recognised.

Candidates should be able to demonstrate interest and experience in teaching signal and image processing. The successful candidate will be required to contribute to teaching within EPS’s Electrical, Electronic & Computer Engineering discipline. Key Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be based at our Edinburgh UK campus. Reporting to the Head of the Institute for Sensors, Signals, and Systems hosting SIPLab, responsibilities include: (i) Carrying out and publishing world-class research; (ii) Establishing, leading, sustaining, and managing a research team; (iii) Delivering undergraduate and postgraduate teaching (including project supervision); (iv) Developing innovative teaching in line with the university’s global nature; (v) Engaging in administrative tasks within the School’s research and teaching ambitions and initiatives.


Essential criteria

  • PhD in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science (or equivalent), in the area of signal and image processing.
  • Research expertise and strong publication record in major international journals and conferences in the broad area of imaging and computation sciences.
  • Evidence of independent research vision and strategy.
  • Experience in teaching and project supervision.

Desirable criteria

  • International research experience.
  • Experience in raising research funding.
  • Experience in managing a research team.
  • Experience of high-performance computing and software technologies.
