The School of Actuarial Science (école d’actuariat), established in 1988, is unique in Canada and offers master's and doctoral programs in actuarial science, in addition to the bachelor’s program. It is a designated Center of excellence of the Society of Actuaries and its courses are recognized under the University Accreditation Program of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries. The School enjoys an enviable reputation for excellence in research, and the quality of its students and graduates is well recognized. The School has a significant fund, the Chair of Actuarial Science, which financially supports research projects and collaboration with scientific and professional organizations, and which also provides student scholarships at all levels.

Job Description

The School of Actuarial Science invites applications for a tenure-track or tenured faculty position in actuarial science.

The applicant should have solid research experience in actuarial science. The successful applicant will have to develop a funded research program, supervise the research of master’s and doctoral students, as well as undergraduate research projects, offer quality instruction at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, contribute to the evolution of undergraduate and graduate programs, and to the establishment of continuing education activities.

Qualifications

• Hold at the time of employment, or be about to obtain, a doctoral degree in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, quantitative finance, computer or data science, or a related field.
• Properly express themselves in French in writing and orally, or commit to be able to do so. Université Laval offers language training helpful for achieving the required level of competency in French.
• Have the potential to teach and to develop an independent research program in actuarial science

Selection criteria

• Relevance of academic training and experience to the identified field, and commitment to pursuing actuarial science activities.
• Demonstrated ability or potential for undergraduate and graduate teaching, graduate student supervision and commitment to pedagogical innovation.
• Demonstrated aptitude for research and potential to develop a productive, self-directed, and original research program.
• Interest and ability for team work in a collaborative manner.
• Appropriateness of the profile to the key competencies of a faculty position: autonomy, creativity and innovation, interpersonal skills, open-mindedness and flexibility, planning and results orientation.
• Holding or being in the process of obtaining an Associate or Fellow title of a North American actuarial association is an asset.
