Position Description

The University of Washington Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine has an Advanced Practice Provider (APP ARNP/PA-C) position available at the rank of Teaching Associate. The successful candidate will serve as an ARNP/PA-C on the Inpatient Pain Consult Service at University of Washington Medical Center. This position is without tenure due to funding and is full-time. The anticipated start date is January 2024 or thereafter. Teaching Associates hold annual appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). This position is temporary with a possibility for extension. The base salary range for this position will be $9,800-$10,500 per month ($117,600-$126,000 annually), commensurate with experience and qualifications. The Pain Service ARNP/PA-C is a member of the Inpatient Pain Services team that includes attending physicians, clinical pharmacists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, residents, and fellows providing inpatient pain consultations to patients, The successful applicant will be responsible for providing pain consult services independently and collaboratively with appropriate privileges, including initial and ongoing assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patient’s medical and psychosocial status. This position works between 10 and 12 nights per month, covering the service from 7 pm - 7 am Monday-Sunday including holidays with scheduled back up to the service. Standards of Practice and Performance Provides timely patient and family assessment for inpatient pain service consults. Facilitates the inpatient Acute Pain Service (APS) and inpatient Chronic Pain Service (CPS) consultation meetings with attending MD and in collaboration with the treating medical team. Participates in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of pain service interventions. Collaborates with the attending MD, primary care provider, and other providers to insure coordination and continuity of care across settings and over time. Attends appropriate clinical meetings and non-clinical meetings to serve as a resource for staff and providers. Facilitates collaboration with the Outpatient and Perioperative Pain Clinics to ensure continuity of care. Provides patient and/or family with health education, counseling and referrals to other health professionals and community resources as appropriate. Participates as a key member of the interdisciplinary team through the development of collaborative and innovative practices and evaluation of patient care outcomes. Evaluates quality outcomes for the Inpatient Pain Services through participation in the development of quality indicators including: Decreased naloxone events Increased patient satisfaction as measured by HCAPS Decreased length of stay for complex pain patients Pain Consult Service ARNP/PA Duties: The Inpatient Pain Consult Service APP maintains excellent interpersonal skills to execute the UWMC Pain Services Best Practice Model. Establishing a therapeutic relationship by imparting a commitment to care for the patient and family through the acute illness and beyond Connecting with the patient and family by eliciting the patient/family perspective and validating the value of that perspective using strong empathic listening skills Communicating a sense of caring and openness Facilitates post discharge calls to coordinate transitions in care. The Inpatient Pain Consult Service APP provides clinical consultation in all the domains of the inpatient pain management. Patient/family/provider communication about disease and treatment and how it relates to patient values, priorities, and goals of care across the spectrum of care. The Inpatient Pain Consult Service APP collaborates with the primary team and other members of the Inpatient Pain Services. Makes individualized pain control recommendations Contributes to the plan of care and communicate the plan to the primary team, patients, and families Prescribes medications to the extent delegated by the primary team Promotes a collaborative approach to decision making Ensures appropriate and timely hand-off of patient care to/from residents and other APPs providing daytime coverage of the service The Inpatient Pain Consult Service APP educates UW School of Medicine students, School of Nursing and PA Program students, and UWMC staff, on all aspects of the inpatient pain services. The Inpatient Pain Consult Service APP assists in program development, develops innovative policies, protocols, and procedures using an evidence based approach to improve quality, safety, and value of inpatient pain services Participates with colleagues throughout UW Medicine and the community on pain service protocol development Participates with UWMC colleagues on APS program development for specific populations (MICU/SICU) Participates with interagency colleagues on Inpatient Pain Services program development across inpatient, outpatient, and community agencies

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Graduate Degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program or accredited Physician Assistant program Nationally certified ARNP/PA with DEA Current and valid state licensure as an ARNP or licensure as a PA in Washington State Proven excellence working in an interdisciplinary collaborative team environment Effective interpersonal skills, leadership skills, and clinical expertise in the care of patients with chronic and acute pain as well as life-limiting illness Desirable Qualifications: Training and experience in inpatient pain management preferred ACLS Certification
