Description

The position is attached academically to the University Department of Radiation Oncology (UKRO). UKRO is a leading clinical and research department at Inselspital, University Hospital Bern, and the Medical Faculty of the University of Bern, with a strong research track on cancer treatment and technology-driven innovation. Together with sitem-insel, UKRO is committed to conceiving, designing, and validating new approaches and solutions based on cutting-edge data science and decision support systems to solve unmet clinical needs in cancer care. In line with the medical faculty’s 2030 digitalization strategy, the position is embedded within an innovative multi-disciplinary research network.

The position will be co-hosted at sitem-insel, the Swiss Institute for Translational and Entrepreneurial Medicine, whose mission is to advance high-quality research for patient benefit in collaboration with partners from industry. At its core, sitem-insel connects and involves all relevant stakeholders to drive forward translational research. The present position also involves a seat on the Executive Committee of sitem-insel, and the successful candidate will academically lead and represent sitem-insel School. The aim of the sitem-insel School is to promote and prepare early career researchers for academia and industry and to train executives in the domains of translational medicine and biomedical entrepreneurship. In partnership with the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Bern, the sitem-insel School offers leading education programs in translational medicine through its sitem Center for Translational Medicine and Entrepreneurship.

Requirements

The successful candidate will have a strong affinity for translational research and applied data science in healthcare with a particular interest in decision support systems, focusing on radiation oncology but also open to other medical and clinical fields. In-depth knowledge and a connection to MedTech industry and entrepreneurship topics are essential to the position. A background in medicine is desirable but not mandatory. The main clinical focus is defined by the partnership with the Department of Radiation Oncology with its associated data platforms (radiation oncology information and planning systems, multi-modal imaging, EPIC).

Regular publication activity and the successful acquisition of competitive external funding in the field of the professorship are prerequisites for the position. We are seeking candidates with excellent integration skills for various research groups and a strong national/international network, with very good communication and interpersonal skills. Other requirements are good knowledge of German, French and English, or readiness to acquire these language skills. Management and leadership experience with corresponding business knowledge are an advantage. Proficiency in teaching and an interest in innovative and contemporary teaching and learning concepts, as well as a strong commitment to the promotion of early career researchers and gender equality, are expected.
