The beamline
CoSAXS is a state of the art SAXS/WAXS beamline on the 3 GeV ring at MAX IV. It has been in user operation since December 2020. We offer a suite of sample environments to cater to our broad user community whose research lies in the fields of Soft Matter, Life Science and Condensed Matter Physics.

MAX IV is looking for a research engineer with a background and interest in X-ray synchrotron radiation based techniques and instrumentation. As a Research Engineer at CoSAXS, you get the opportunity to develop new skills, work independently on projects and perform a variety of tasks. You are an important part of the team, where you contribute with your expertise in electronics and mechanical design to streamline and optimise the performance at CoSAXS and improve opportunities for cutting edge research.

Examples of work tasks

  • Contribute to the design, purchase, installation and documentation of new beamline components and sample environments to ensure the availability of a competitive and reliable beamline. 
  • Develop strategies for diagnostics and controls of the CoSAXS technical infrastructure. 
  • Assisting the beamline team in supporting user experiments, including providing solutions for the installation and operation of user-owned equipment.
  • Ensuring a beamline maintenance program in coordination with technical teams at MAX IV.



To be successful in this role you need to have the following qualifications 

  • A degree in engineering, physics, chemistry or materials science with specialization in electrics/electronics, mechanical design, machine maintenance, automation or similar.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of handling, operating and maintaining complex equipment, X-ray optics and/or vacuum components. 
  • Documented experience of the design and implementation of complex sample environment.
  • Experience of instrumentation controls hardware and software.
  • The candidate must be able to read and understand complex manuals (in English).
  • General IT skills (Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Good communication skills, both spoken and written, in English.



Below are seen as merits

  • Experience with support of user groups at a synchrotron radiation facility or a similar user-oriented research facility is a merit.
  • The candidate may have led the commissioning of equipment at a synchrotron beamline. 
  • The candidate may be familiar with beamline operation software, e.g. Spock/Spec.
  • The candidate may have experience in managing instrumentation projects.
  • The candidate may be familiar with programming in python.
  • The candidate may be familiar with writing simple GUIs for controlling equipment.


This is a permanent employment. Probational period may apply.
