Position Description:

The Department of Surgery, Division of Pediatric Surgery at the University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital is currently accepting applications for a pediatric surgeon to join their growing tertiary academic clinical practice.  The University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital is the region’s largest and most comprehensive Children’s Hospital, specializing in multidisciplinary care of complex newborn and pediatric conditions. 

Appointment can be at the Assistant or Associate level in either the tenure or clinical track depending on experience and qualifications.  Excellent opportunities for clinical and basic science research, including start-up funding and protected time, are available for interested individuals. Leadership opportunities in the areas of pediatric trauma, critical care, ECMO, quality improvement or program development may be available for the appropriate candidate.

Education Requirement:

  • Candidates must hold an MD, DO, or an equivalent degree

  • Completed training in all phases of General Surgery

  • Completed subspecialty training in Pediatric Surgery



Required Qualifications:

  • Expertise in the management of trauma is required for candidates interested in leadership positions in pediatric trauma

  • ECMO experience/training is required for candidates interested in leadership position in ECMO

  • Appointment to the tenure track requires research experience at a level which enables procurement of outside funding

  • Must demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills

  • Must possess a strong commitment to academic and clinical excellence

  • Professional job-related experience fostering or promoting a welcoming and respectful work/academic environment where people of all backgrounds and perspectives feel welcomed and appreciated; or demonstrated the ability to do so



Certifications:

  • BE/BC in General Surgery and Pediatric Surgery from the American Board of Surgery



Desirable Qualifications:

  • Recent fellowship graduates with strong interest in academic surgery are encouraged to apply

  • Critical care board eligibility/certification is desirable for candidates interested in leadership positions in pediatric surgical critical care

  • Demonstrated achievements in team building, performance improvement, and program development are highly desirable

  • Applicants with established research are preferred
