Position Description:

The University of Iowa Department of Anesthesia is seeking an accomplished academic anesthesiologist to serve as Division Chief for Multispecialty Anesthesia. This individual will report to the Chair of the Department of Anesthesia. The division chief will be responsible for all aspects of the Department of Anesthesia missions as they pertain to the practice of the following specialties: general surgery, otolaryngology, oral surgery, vascular surgery, trauma surgery, urology, neurosurgical, transplant surgery, and ophthalmology. The division chief will have a clear vision for advancing these anesthesia specialties and will collaborate with perioperative physicians and other colleagues. The Department of Anesthesia is seeking a faculty member for appointment on the Clinical or Tenure Track at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor rank, depending on qualifications. 

These responsibilities include:

o Clinical Care: Leading multispecialty anesthesia clinical operations to ensure consistent, high-quality patient care with efficient and innovative utilization of clinical and material resources.

o Collaboration: Promoting effective collaborations among divisional faculty and other clinical and research scientists across the campus to foster a multidisciplinary approach to patient care and research.

o Education: Facilitating and enhancing medical education in multispecialty anesthesia, ensuring that educational programs are cutting-edge and meet the highest standards.

o Faculty Development: Encourage professional growth and excellence among faculty members within the division. Supporting faculty career development, fostering an environment that encourages professional growth and excellence.

o Research: Drive research initiatives and innovations in each of the Anesthesia specialties, including the development of new techniques, protocols, and research initiatives that contribute to the field’s body of knowledge. 

o Operations and Strategy: Overseeing the development and implementation of quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and operational efficiency within the division.

o Administration: Representing the division in departmental, hospital, and university committees, contributing to the strategic planning and policy-making processes.

Internal Resources:

o Opportunity to participate in the development and refinement of simulation models for graduate and postgraduate education in the multispecialties.

o Active clinical research program support, including participation in international, multi-center trials.

o NIH-funded Institute for Clinical and Translational Science, which includes collaboration with investigators from all 11 colleges on campus.

Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any misconduct history or pending research misconduct investigation including but not limited to sexual misconduct in prior employment and provide a related release and will be subject to a criminal background and credential check.

 

Education Requirement:

  • MD, DO, or equivalent degree.

  • Successful completion of an approved residency program in anesthesiology.

  • Completion of a Fellowship in any of the Multispecialty areas.



Required Qualifications:

  • Eligibility for medical licensure in the state of Iowa.

  • Board certification in Anesthesiology (or non-US Board equivalent).



Certifications:

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification.



Desirable Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for working with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

  • Interest in teaching and/or basic or clinical research.
