The Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health, Mailman School of Public Health is a vibrant department of approximately 15 full-time faculty from a variety of professional backgrounds (public health, law, sociology, psychology, medicine, social work, demography) whose work focuses on domestic and global issues related to sexual and reproductive health and rights, forced migration, child and adolescent health, environmental justice, human rights, and complex health systems. Faculty in this largely grant-funded department engage in a unique combination of research, teaching and service activities. Graduates of the Department pursue careers as research scientists, NGO leaders, public health practitioners, and evaluators who actively contribute to the scientific literature and assume important academic posts and public health leadership globally. Housed in the Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health, Mailman School of Public Health, the Program on Forced Migration and Health is one of the world’s leading programs for training health and humanitarian response workers. At its founding in 1998, our program was one of the first academic programs in the world to address the deficiencies in health services provided in humanitarian response. Today, we continue to champion a professionalized and critical approach to delivering humanitarian action and are committed to educating the next generation of humanitarian leadership. Through our research and education, we seek to create an evidence-based humanitarian sector anchored in the voices and decision-making of those most impacted by conflict and displacement and founded on a framework of justice, rights, and accountability. The Department is seeking a faculty member to serve as the Program Director for the Program on Forced Migration and Health (PFMH). The incumbent will provide guidance and vision to the ongoing development and expansion of PFMH. The successful candidate is expected to perform as a scholar and teacher in the Department, possessing a prominent record of academic research, scholarship, service and teaching in forced migration and humanitarian health; a demonstrated capacity to secure external research funding (multilateral, government, private and individual sources); experience in cultivating partnerships with a diverse and global set of actors (think tanks, UN and multilateral institutions, NGOs and government); and a dedication to the development and training of the next generation of humanitarian health response workers. In addition, the incumbent will provide leadership for the Advanced Certificate program in Public Health and Humanitarian Action (PHHA), which includes overseeing certificate requirements, ensuring the curriculum reflects the changing needs of the field, and mentoring students who pursue the PHHA certificate. The incumbent will work closely with PFMH faculty and staff, who influence policy and practice in forced migration and humanitarian contexts globally. Our faculty addresses a diverse array of issues pertinent to the humanitarian field, including sexual and reproductive health and rights, child protection and wellbeing, mental health and psychosocial support, and strengthening systems in resource-constrained health settings. Minimum Degree Required: Ph.D., M.D. or professional equivalent. An advanced degree in public health, law, social sciences, medicine or a related field is required. Minimum Qualifications: Non-tenure: The department focuses on teaching, research and professional experience in population and family health. Tenure: The department requires a strong teaching, research and publication record in addition to the ability to secure independent funding. Preferred Qualifications: Extensive field experience in humanitarian/forced migration settings is highly desirable. Strong background in research and peer-reviewed publications. Demonstrated experience in leading diverse and multi-disciplinary teams. Strong language skills in Arabic, Spanish or French.
