ASSISTANT TEACHING PROFESSOR in ART EDUCATION

The Department of Curriculum & Instruction, University of Victoria invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor in Art Education. This is a full-time teaching stream appointment to commence July 1, 2025, or as soon as possible after that date. The position requires a team player who will provide intellectual and organizational leadership to complement the work and focus of the current faculty members and programs. We are seeking an innovative colleague whose expertise and experience in the area of Art Education demonstrates:

• the potential to teach a range of Art Education courses within our undergraduate and graduate programs
• the potential to contribute to scholarship of teaching in Art Education
• knowledge of research, theories, concepts, and practices in Art Education
• potential to work creatively and collaboratively with art education faculty to contribute to existing and potential future programs in Art Education.

The candidate’s qualifications, experience and overall market demand will determine a candidate’s final salary offer. The salary for this position includes a competitive salary range of $102,000- $126,000. UVic is committed to offering an equitable and competitive salary, inclusive of a generous benefits package, eligible leaves and pension plan.

Requirements

What you will do:

• Teach art education pedagogy, theory and studio practice at the undergraduate and graduate levels;
• Participate in communities and service to the broader academic community and to the profession;
• Contribute to scholarship of teaching within the field of art education.

What we are looking for (success criteria):

1. A PhD. or EdD. (including ABD) in art education;
2. An active program of studio practice and inquiry;
3. Teaching and studio competence in at least two of the following areas (e.g. digital, painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, design and photography);
4. Teaching experience in post-secondary, K-12 and/or community settings;
5. Collaborative skills and experiences;
6. Commitment to integrated appropriate technologies into classroom practice and across studio disciplines;
7. Commitment to enacting inclusive practices with diverse populations.

Additional criteria (not required but an asset):

1. Ability to teach digital art education at the undergraduate and graduate level; and
2. Ability to teach elementary and secondary art methods in the teacher education program.

The Department of Curriculum & Instruction is comprised of a dynamic community of educators and researchers committed to building equitable and transformative educational and professional environments. The Art Education section is involved in a strong undergraduate teacher preparation program with introductory studio-based Art Education courses that are also open to the full campus community; a unique studio-focused MEd degree; and a research-orientated M.A. and PhD. UVic Art Education is built around extensive, purpose-built studio facilities and a very active faculty community. It has a long history of engagement with art teaching and experiential learning. Faculty are also active in service to the university, and the larger community, both nationally and internationally.
