The Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine (ISPM), University of Bern, employs over 150 staff, provides undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and carries out research in a range of disciplines relevant to clinical epidemiology and public health.


We are looking for an experienced Research Project Manager to provide administrative oversight for a large multi-national research consortium, IeDEA-Southern Africa ( ?url=www.iedea-sa.org&module=jobs&id=625237" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">www.iedea-sa.org ). You will work closely with a team of epidemiologists, clinicians, PhD students, data scientists and statisticians based at the ISPM, with our project partners at the University of Cape Town, as well as collaborating cohorts in South Africa, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Serve as the administrative project leader responsible for project planning, timelines, contracting, budgets, reporting, and compliance issues
  • Manage day-to-day administrative activities of the project, acting as the primary administrative contact for US NIH grants management, university grants office, and project collaborators
  • Coordinate submission of annual progress reports and supplemental funding applications; support project audits and financial reports in cooperation with the financial team
  • Ensure compliance with all funding agency policies and regulations (e.g. ethical committees, open access publications, risk management plans)
  • Prepare and monitor core annual and sub-project budgets, site payments and sub-awardee financial reporting
  • Line management of non-scientific project staff


  • University degree in a relevant business or scientific field with at least 3 years project management experience; experience with multi-center and multi-national research projects preferred
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, strong attention to detail, ability to set priorities and meet deadlines, proactive mind-set
  • Strong budgeting and financial reporting skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication in English is essential
  • Experience with US (e.g. NIH, NSF) or EU funded research projects would be an advantage

We offer

The position is available immediately and is funded for 5 years. Salary depends on qualification and experience and is based on the salary scale of the canton of Bern.
