Are you a remote sensing specialist, with extensive experience of processing data from space-borne hyperspectral infrared missions? Can you demonstrate your experience in leading and co-ordinating scientific teams?

EUMETSAT is the European satellite agency for monitoring weather and climate. Bringing together the resources of 30 Member States, we develop and operate a range of satellite systems surveying the atmosphere, ocean and climate that deliver data 24 hours a day. Our data is vital to weather forecasts that protect lives and property, and to monitoring the changing climate. EUMETSAT is now developing the next generation of satellite systems, shaping its long-term future.

Description

We are recruiting for a Hyperspectral Infrared Competence Area Manager, to work within the Remote Sensing and Products Division of EUMETSAT, to be responsible for the day-to-day management of the scientific team and all scientific activities within the Competence Area. The Hyperspectral Competence Area is responsible for the scientific development, maintenance, validation and monitoring of the products extracted from the hyperspectral infrared instrument chains exploited and developed by EUMETSAT e.g. IASI, IASI-NG and IRS.

In this role you will manage and develop the team and its resources, including the continued development of the scientific knowledge required to support the exploitation and evolution of EUMETSAT hyperspectral infrared instrument chains. You will need to be both analytical and interactive to engage with our user community, encouraging usage of current level-1 and level-2 products and collecting feedback to shape improved products going forwards. Working with this feedback and other data you will lead the definition of new or improved infrared products from hyperspectral infrared sounding instrument chains. You will lead the functional analysis, algorithm definition and prototyping of processing software, and be involved in the definition of requirements, calibration and monitoring, going on to lead the validation work for the level-1 and level-2 processing functions for current and future EUMETSAT hyperspectral infrared sounding instrument chains. You will develop through your team new scientific concepts in terms of prototyping scientific software, candidate algorithms and reference processors including the management of internal and external studies.

Requirements

Along with a university degree in a relevant discipline, i.e. remote sensing, physics or meteorology (or equivalent) you will have proven skills/experience in the following:

  • extensive experience in the remote sensing and processing of data from relevant space-borne hyperspectral infrared missions, preferably in an operational 24/7 environment
  • detailed scientific knowledge of hyperspectral infrared atmospheric sounding and their operational applications
  • experience in leading and co-ordinating scientific teams, including management of performance and maintenance of key skills and knowledge
  • experience in the development and coding of scientific application software
  • experience in working with user communities and researchers
  • strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills including demonstrated experience in writing scientific and technical documents

In addition working experience in the area of calibration of hyperspectral infrared instruments would be considered an advantage.

All applicants must be a EUMETSAT Member State national with a good working knowledge of the English language, both spoken and written. You also require some knowledge of French.
