Open Rank Professorship Additive Manufacturing for Medical Applications

University of Bern
Medical Faculty
WorkplaceBern, Bern region, Switzerland
Start1 March 2018

The Medical Faculty of the University of Bern invites applications for an

Open Rank Professorship in Additive Manufacturing (AM)

at the Swiss Institute for Translational and Entrepreneurial Medicine (SITEM). Young researchers suitable for Tenure Track Assistant Professorships are also encouraged to apply.

SITEM is the Swiss medical and bio-technology translation accelerator with an earmarked budget of CHF 50M. It brings together Switzerland’s largest tertiary, clinical hospital centre and the research capabilities of the multi-faculty University of Bern and other Swiss national research institutions. SITEM will be housed in a newly-built facility with full-service bioengineering resources, including a comprehensive 1M CHF AM laboratory dedicated to medical applications. The successful candidate will have AM for medical applications research capabilities to increase the profile and effectiveness of the ongoing biomedical engineering research efforts at the University of Bern.

Candidates are expected to hold a doctorate in biomedical or mechanical engineering, material sciences or a related technology specialty and have an established research track record in AM and 3D printing methods using metallic, plastic, ceramic or composite materials for medical applications and/or using biological materials for tissue engineering scaffolds. The post-holder will be expected to establish and run an internationally competitive research group, which will be embedded into the medical faculty of the University of Bern. The aim is to build an integrated, multidisciplinary research capability that links with the clinical specialty departments at the University Hospital of Bern/Inselspital, liaise with ongoing biomedical engineering research efforts at the University of Bern and other relevant national and international research institutions. Collaborations with industry partners with a view to translate novel medical applications, products or services into clinical care and the healthcare market place must be an important research objective for the leadership of the respective group.

There is an expectation of a strong commitment to high-quality graduate student teaching and mentoring. Teaching by the post holder will be delivered in the Graduate School for Cellular and Biomedical Sciences of the University of Bern and will confer relevant modules of the specialist Masters programme in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Bern. Candidates should demonstrate success in the acquisition of significant third party research funding and/or industry-funded commercial research collaborations. Knowledge of project development and funding strategies for translational research and biomedical product development are a prerequisite, as are an entrepreneurial and innovation-driven outlook. Operational experience in budgeting and administration matters in the context of a mid-size academic research group is essential.

To ensure translational impact of the SITEM research programme through the input from the post-holder, a solid understanding of technology transfer to clinical adoption and industry application is important. Experience in medical technology clinical trials and the evaluation of novel technology for industry-readiness would be desirable. Collaboration with research groups of the Bern Biomedical Engineering Network (?url=www.bbme.ch&module=jobs&id=794271" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">www.bbme.ch) as well as with other academic institutions, nationally and internationally will be integral to the priorities of the AM for medical technology group.
