The University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Lucerne – Department Technology and Architecture is the leading educational and research institution in central Switzerland for architecture and technology. It offers bachelor and master degrees and pursues research and development projects. In a total of six departments, the University of Applied Sciences and Arts, occupies 1’600 employees and educates 10’500 students.

The competence centre Thermal Energy Storage (TES) focuses on energy storage technologies on a material and component level as well as on energy system analysis and optimization. We are involved in the national research network «Swiss Competence Center for Energy Research (SCCER) Storage of Heat and Electricity».

We are looking for a person to join the Institute of Mechanical and Energy Engineering (IME) starting in on 01.01.2018 or upon agreement.

Research Associate (PhD Student): Latent Heat Storage (100%)

Description

  • Advancement of the topic: "High Power Latent Storage using Advanced Heat Exchangers"
  • Heat and mass transfer modelling of heat exchangers for latent heat stores
  • Design of novel heat exchangers (metallic and/or polymeric) and testing in latent energy storage test-rigs
  • Planning and execution of experimental campaigns for the characterisation of heat exchangers
  • Data processing and interpretation of results
  • Measurements of thermophysical properties using analytical methods and analysis/interpretation of results
  • Material optimisation by the use additives
  • Writing scientific articles and participation in academic conferences
  • Co-supervising bachelor and master theses

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or Diploma in Engineering, Physics or Material Science
  • Enthusiasm about energy topics
  • Experience in heat and mass transfer modelling desired
  • Experience with material synthesis and thermal analytical methods desired
  • Excellent English skills, both written and spoken, good German skills desired
  • Project management, presentation skills, rapid familiarization with new topics
  • Creative, team-minded, communicative and eager for knowledge
  • Enthusiastic about energy topics and tackling complex problems
