Breeding for Sustainable Forage Cropping Systems
Academic year (9-month) appointment
RESPONSIBILITIES: Advances in biochemistry, metabolomics, and metabolic engineering, high-throughput phenotyping and the availability of genomic sequences for forage crop species are opening new and valuable research opportunities for plant breeding. This forage breeding position will have responsibility for conducting innovative research using new robotic, field-based agronomics, genomic tools, metagenomics and genome-wide selection strategies in collaboration with other scientists and the Cornell Initiative for Digital Agriculture. Specific topics within this overarching goal might include: how forage composition traits interact with the dairy cattle gastrointestinal microbiome and dairy cattle genetics to impact feed efficiency and dairy production; value-added aspects as cover crops to sequester carbon, break disease cycles and fix nitrogen for future crops; the use of high-throughput phenotyping, environmental/weather data and crop modeling, etc., to drive the development of new forage cultivars adapted to abiotic/biotic stressors that are becoming more common with climate change; evaluation and breeding of promising field crop species for use as feedstocks for biofuels and bioproducts; and sustainable cropping systems using cover crops and perennial grains. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an externally-funded research program, release improved germplasm and/or varieties and contribute to undergraduate and graduate student training in plant breeding/crop science/genetics/biological statistics. The successful candidate will be expected to teach one course at the undergraduate level and one at the graduate level. We seek highly-motivated individuals whose strong research and teaching credentials have prepared them to contribute meaningfully to our program and our historical commitment to diversity. This position has a 60:40 research and teaching responsibility.
QUALIFICATIONS : A Ph.D. is required in plant breeding, plant genetics/genomics or plant molecular biology or related discipline. Strength in quantitative genetics/statistics is highly desirable. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to work with other researchers in interdisciplinary inquiry, attract extramural support and lead an innovative research/breeding program. Postdoctoral and/or other relevant experience is desirable, with experience preferred in relevant teaching, student advising, and research.
