Scientists construct first map of how the brain organizes everything we see
Our eyes may be our window to the world, but how do we make sense of the thousands of images that flood our retinas each day? Scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, have found that the brain is wired to put in order all the categories of objects and actions that we see. They have created the first interactive map of how the brain organizes these groupings.

Switching with a few photons for quantum computing
Switching with a few photons for quantum computing
Quantum computing, where bits of information, or "qubits," are represented by the state of single atomic particles or photons of light, won't be of much use unless we can read the results. Cornell researchers have taken a step in that direction with a device that can measure the presence of just a few photons without disturbing them.

Researchers trying to get computers to see as humans do
Madison, Wisconsin - How could a few pictures of a dog in the grass illustrate key concepts underlying computer vision, a sophisticated science aimed at teaching machines to perform visual tasks for humans - such as recognizing faces, objects and patterns? Vikas Singh , assistant professor of biostatistics and medical informatics at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, and graduate students Maxwell Collins and Jia Xu understand the relationship very well.

New statistical method offers automatic mitotic cell detection for cancer diagnosis
Scientists have developed a statistical image analysis method which can assist in the grading of breast cancer by automatically segmenting tumour regions and detecting dividing cells in tissue samples. The system, developed at the University of Warwick, promises to bring objectivity and automation to the cancer grading process which is used to determine the aggressiveness of the treatment offered to the patient.

Word choices on political issues reveal ways of thinking
Word choices on political issues reveal ways of thinking Communication and information science researches have developed a free online tool that offers a new way of looking at the news. "Reflext" provides a glimpse into how political events are being covered and discussed. The Reflext site analyzes content from 10 major media outlets, more than 30 political blogs and recent presidential campaign speeches, using the linguistic concept of "selectional preference," which identifies associations among words.

Quantum computing with recycled particles
Quantum computing with recycled particles
A research team from the University of Bristol's Centre for Quantum Photonics (CQP) have brought the reality of a quantum computer one step closer by experimentally demonstrating a technique for significantly reducing the physical resources required for quantum factoring. The team have shown how it is possible to recycle the particles inside a quantum computer, so that quantum factoring can be achieved with only one third of the particles originally required.

Direct correlation between hospital bedsores, patient mortality
A new clinical study spearheaded by the dean of UCLA's School of Nursing has found a direct correlation between pressure ulcers — commonly known as bedsores — and patient mortality and increased hospitalization. The research is believed to be the first of its kind to use data directly from medical records to assess the impact of hospital-acquired pressure ulcers on Medicare patients at national and state levels.
