UW astronomer Eric Agol assists in new seven-planet NASA discovery using ‘distracted driving’ technique
University of Washington astronomy professor Eric Agol is part of the large team of researchers that has just announced confirmation of several Earth-sized, potentially habitable planets orbiting a star about 40 light-years (235 trillion miles) away. Astronomers with NASA today, Feb. 22, announced confirmation of the first known planetary system with seven Earth-sized planets orbiting a single star, called TRAPPIST-1, in the Aquarius constellation.

China’s severe weather patterns changing drastically since 1960
"A monsoon is one of the major drivers of severe weather because it affects the three necessary 'ingredients' for severe weather, which are wind shear, instability and triggering," said Fuqing Zhang, professor of meteorology and atmospheric science, Penn State. UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. In one of the most comprehensive studies on trends in local severe weather patterns to date, an international team of researchers found that the frequency of hail storms, thunderstorms and high wind events has decreased by nearly 50 percent on average throughout China since 1960.

Fossil discovery rewrites understanding of reproductive evolution
Fossil discovery rewrites understanding of reproductive evolution
A remarkable 250 million-year-old "terrible-headed lizard" fossil found in China shows an embryo inside the mother - clear evidence for live birth. University of Queensland School of Earth and Environmental Sciences Head Professor Jonathan Aitchison said the Dinocephalosaurus fossil provided the first evidence for live birth in an animal group previously thought to exclusively lay eggs.

Ancient fossil reveals first evidence of live birth in animals thought to lay eggs
The first ever evidence of live birth in an animal group previously thought to lay eggs exclusively has been discovered by an international team of scientists, including a palaeontologist from the University of Bristol. The remarkable 250 million-year-old fossil from China shows an embryo inside the mother.

The heart of a far-off star beats for its planet
The heart of a far-off star beats for its planet
For the first time, astronomers from MIT and elsewhere have observed a star pulsing in response to its orbiting planet. The star, which goes by the name HAT-P-2, is about 400 light years from Earth and is circled by a gas giant measuring eight times the mass of Jupiter - one of the most massive exoplanets known today.

The oxygen content increased when the Earth was covered in ice
The oxygen content increased when the Earth was covered in ice
In the beginning, planet Earth was a very inhospitable place with no oxygen and only single-celled bacteria as inhabitants. According to a new study, the oxygen content in the air began to increase about 2.4 billion years ago, at the same time as the global glaciation and when all continents were gathered in a single huge landmass, or supercontinent.

Rare meteorites challenge our understanding of the solar system
Rare meteorites challenge our understanding of the solar system
Researchers have discovered minerals from 43 meteorites that landed on Earth 470 million years ago. More than half of the mineral grains are from meteorites completely unknown or very rare in today's meteorite flow. These findings mean that we will probably need to revise our current understanding of the history and development of the solar system.

Heat from Earth’s core could be underlying force in plate tectonics
Researchers find the East Pacific Rise is dynamic as heat is transferred, showing that plate dynamics are driven significantly by additional force of heat drawn from Earth's core. For decades, scientists have theorized that the movement of Earth's tectonic plates is driven largely by negative buoyancy created as they cool.
