A global list of the most highly cited researchers has found nine University of Birmingham academics to be amongst the most influential researchers as determined by their peers around the globe - those who have consistently won recognition in the form of high citation counts over a decade. Placement on the list has been recognised as a significant achievement for those named and marks an increase on previous years.

New research review finds scant evidence for the widespread belief that attending a "top tier" college leads to success in school and in life. It's that time of year again, when many high school seniors - and their parents - are stressed out about college applications. They pour over college brochures and websites, talk to friends and spend sleepless nights eyeing rankings in an exhaustive exercise to choose the best school.

How much impact does research carried out at individual universities have on innovation globally? To find out, a team of scientists from several schools developed a ranking system based on citations in patent literature. And on that score, EPFL sits in seventh place, just behind Stanford and above the California Institute of Technology.
