Chancellor Carol Christ sent the following message to the UC Berkeley community on October 28, 2018:

Dear campus community,

Today we join together with millions of people around our country and the world to condemn the horrific and senseless violence in a Pittsburgh synagogue on Saturday. On behalf of the UC Berkeley community, I extend our sincere condolences and strong support to the relatives, friends and colleagues of the 11 Jewish Americans who were senselessly slaughtered in their house of worship. We are all members of the extended, global family that mourns their loss.

This is just the latest of what appear to be hate-driven incidents targeting people simply because of their identity, ethnicity, race, religion, or beliefs. Even as we seek to build and sustain a campus community where everyone - everyone - feels welcome, respected and safe, we also must stand and work together with all who believe in and are committed to a peaceful, equitable world where differences are celebrated.

We also extend our support and sympathy to members of our own community who have been affected by this terrible news.

For students needing general support, please contact  deanofstudents [at] berkeley (p) edu  or visit the  well-being resources section of the associate vice Chancellor and dean of students’ website  for information about holistic wellness resources across campus.
