Complutense University of Madrid climbs 27 places in the QS 2019 ranking

  • Odontology (24th place) and Veterinary (34th place), are in the top 50 in the world.

Madrid, 1 March 2019 . The latest edition of the QS ranking, prepared by Quacquarelli Symonds, places two faculties of the Complutense University of Madrid in the top 50 worldwide. These are: the Faculty of Dentistry which occupies the 24th position and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine which reaches the 34th position.

The Complutense University occupies in this ranking in 2019 the position 206, improving 27 positions with respect to 2018.

The QS divides the degrees into 48 subjects, which are distributed within 5 major branches of knowledge: Art and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences and Administration. The UCM is included in all the rankings of each of these branches of knowledge, and in 32 of the thematic ones.

The UCM is in the top 100 of the branch of Art and Humanities, specifically in 85th place, 158th in Social Sciences, 175th in the branch of Sciences, 196th in Life Sciences and Medicine, and 226th in Engineering and Technology.

As for the thematic areas, in the branch of Art and Humanities, the UCM is among the top 100 worldwide in Archaeology, History, and Modern Languages. In the top 150 in Art and Design, and English Philology and Literature. And, the top 200 in Linguistics, and in Philosophy. They stand out especially for their academic reputation.

In the branch of Life Sciences and Medicine, the Complutense is very well rated in indicators of academic reputation and citations by scientific publications. The excellent position of Odontology (24) and Veterinary (34) has already been pointed out. It is also among the top 100 positions for Pharmacy, and in the top 150 for Psychology, and Agriculture and Forestry. Finally, it is in the top 200 for Medicine, and in the top 250 for Biology.

Within the branch of Social Sciences and Administration, the studies of Communication and Audiovisual Studies, and Law are among the top 100 universities. In the top 150 in Political Sciences and International Relations and in Sociology. In the top 200 for Accounting and Finance, Education, and Statistics and Operations Research. Finally, in the top 250 for Business Administration and Management, and Economics. These degrees stand out especially in research indicators, specifically in the number of citations per published article.

As far as the branch of Natural Sciences is concerned, the strong point of the Complutense is also research, standing out in the indicators of citations by articles and citations by H-index. The UCM is in the top 100 for Geography, in the top 150 for Chemistry, in the top 200 for degrees in Earth and Marine Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Mathematics, and Physics. Finally, in the top 250 in Materials Science.

In the branch of Engineering and Technology, the UCM again obtained a high score in the research indicators. Specifically, it is in the top 150 for Chemical Engineering, and in the top 200 for Computer Science and Information Systems.
