DATE: 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13, 2021
EVENT: The University of Michigan Law School will commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution with guest speaker Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, who will discuss trust and voting.
U-M law professor Richard Friedman will moderate.
As the state’s 43rd Secretary of State, Benson’s role is focused on ensuring elections are secure and accessible. She is the author of "State Secretaries of State: Guardians of the Democratic Process,” which highlights the role of the secretary of state in enforcing election and campaign finance laws.
A graduate of Harvard Law School and expert on civil rights law, education law and election law, Benson previously served as dean of the Wayne State University Law School. She also served as CEO of the Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality, a national nonprofit organization using the unifying power of sports to improve race relations.
A federal law requires that all schools receiving federal funding recognize the Constitution’s "birthday,” which is Sept. 17.
