Ghent University features amongst the top 50 in 5 of the 48 subjects in this year’s QS World University Rankings by Subject: Veterinary Sciences, Sport Sciences, Psychology, Agriculture and Archaeology.
To compile this seventh edition, QS ranked 1,100 institutions in total. Ghent University now features amongst the world’s elite institutions in 33 of the 48 subjects in this year’s QS World University Rankings by Subject.
Veterinary Sciences gained some places and is now on place 17. Sport Sciences and Agriculture also improved their position (place 33 and 40 respectively). Â For the first time this year, Archaeology has achieved a potion in the top 50 (place 43). Psychology has lost some places but is still on place 39. For 9 other subjects Ghent University takes a prominent place in the top 51-100.
For nine other subject fields Ghent University takes a position from 51 to 100: History, Biology, Nursing, Pharmacy, Environmental Sciences, Geography, Education, Law and Statistics.
The methodology for this ranking combines analysis from QS Global Employer and Academic Surveys with bibliometric data from Elsevier’s Scopus database. Scopus is the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature. Its comprehensive database contains 55+ million items indexed ensuring broad interdisciplinary coverage in the fields of science, technology, medicine, social sciences and arts and humanities. Obviously rankings measure only limited dimensions of a university and there are some discussions about the methodology of certain rankings. The QS ranking in particular gets criticized because of its use of reputationsurveys for which the methodology is unclear and surveyresults are non-transparant.
Ghent University in Asia
Since this ranking has a very strong foothold, especially in Asia, these results can further facilitate the position of Ghent University in Asia, and the development of the UGent campus in Korea in particular.
