Much more than mining on offer at Curtin Kalgoorlie Open Day

Visitors to Curtin Kalgoorlie Open Day will be spoilt for choice by the many course and career opportunities supported by the campus, including in health, mining, engineering, commerce, journalism, teaching, as well as the activities on offer.

The free event at Curtin University’s Kalgoorlie campus will offer friendly career advice, course and enrolment information, and fun activities for local school students and members of the community.

Curtin University Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic Professor Paul Brunton said visitors can discuss course and career options with helpful Curtin staff, including our highly engaged teaching and learning staff, and speak with industry representatives about how Curtin’s partnerships with them can pave the way for entry into the workforce.

"In addition to the world-renowned engineering degrees offered at the WA School of Mines: Minerals, Energy and Chemical Engineering, study at Curtin Kalgoorlie can lead to exciting careers in fields from healthcare to the media," Professor Brunton said.

"Students can study a large number of Curtin courses such as teaching, health sciences, journalism, business, the Indigenous Tertiary Enabling Course and Uniready. Students receive local support provided at the campus where students also have access to all of the facilities including the library and study spaces.

"This year for the first time, we are delighted to welcome some of our valued industry partners, beyond the mining and resources sector, to Kalgoorlie Open Day. People interested in a career in the finance, health or media sectors will be able to speak with representatives from Bankwest, Full Circle Therapies Inc, Goldfield Rehabilitation Services and local daily – The Kalgoorlie Miner."

Curtin’s Kalgoorlie Campus Director Sabina Shugg said Open Day was a fantastic opportunity for high school students about to begin their university journey, as well as locals who may already be working, but looking to post graduate study or a career change.

"Curtin Kalgoorlie is an integral part of the local community and we welcome all visitors to our Open Day and invite them to explore areas of our wonderful campus," Ms Shugg said.

"People can visit the WASM Graduates Hall and also inspect some of the latest technologies, resources, academic student support resources and online collaboration tools.

"There will be tours of the new , which opened last year and has facilities including a simulation clinical hospital ward and rooms for clinical training and assessments.

"Visitors can also learn about the flexible pathways into Curtin and the large number of online courses offered through Curtin’s partnership with Open Universities Australia, which includes access to all of the facilities available at Curtin Kalgoorlie."

Curtin Kalgoorlie Open Day will also host a range of fun activities such as gold panning, virtual reality experiences and the chance to discover the science behind fairy floss.
