EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT
Experts on poverty-related issues from across the country will come to the University of Michigan this fall to discuss the complex causes and consequences of poverty and point to potential solutions.
The seven-week Real-World Perspectives on Poverty Solutions speaker series will run from Sept. 27 through Nov. 8, with talks taking place at noon on Fridays at the U-M School of Social Work (ECC 1840) as well as livestreamed online.
The talks are free and open to the public.
The speaker series will feature scholars from various disciplines, advocates, documentary filmmakers, and representatives from foundations and community organizations. They will cover topics ranging from the opioid epidemic to food insecurity, equity in education, health care, community-level violence interventions, and more.
Speaker series lineup:
- Sept. 27: "Inheritance: 11 Years in the Life of One Boy in the Opioid Epidemic,- featuring Amy Toensing and Matt Moyer, documentary filmmakers
- Oct. 4: "A Fair Work Week: Raising the Floor on Precarious Scheduling,- featuring Daniel Schneider, Harvard University; and Kristen Harknett, University of California San Francisco
- Oct. 11: "All Means All: Schools Where Everyone is Somebody,- featuring Peter Cookson, Georgetown University
- Oct. 18: "Leveraging the Power of Empathy to Build Equitable Health Care Systems,- featuring Margo Brooks Carthon, University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing
- Oct. 25: "Living on the Edge: How Economic Insecurity Harms Children and Families,- featuring Trina Shanks, University of Michigan
- Nov. 1: "Empowering Communities to Reduce Violence and Improve Economic Mobility,- featuring a panel of Poverty Solutions staff and community partners involved with Detroit’s ShotStoppers gun violence intervention program
Nov. 8: "From Surviving to Thriving: The Importance of Engaging People with Lived Expertise - featuring Barbie Izquierdo, Feeding America
