Public Screening of 1959 Film Pickpocket

On June 19, the Institut Français and the Freie Universität Berlin’s Frankreich-Zentrum will present the French feature film Pickpocket by Robert Bresson in the French original. The film tells the story of a young intellectual with a growing obsession with pickpocketing. The film theorist Dr. Sulgi Lie from the University of Basel will introduce the film. Marika Green, the film’s female lead, will be present for a discussion following the screening. The event is free and open to the public. Pickpocket was nominated for a Golden Bear at the 10th Berlinale in 1960. Robert Bresson has received many international awards for his work. Robert Bresson’s films are characterized by his use of amateur actors and stylized voices as well as his special interest in the aesthetics of the hors-champ technique.
