The University of Queensland has jumped to the top of the national table in Agriculture and Forestry, and it also ranks first in Australia for Environmental Sciences and Sports-Related Subjects, according to the latest international rankings survey.

UQ is also in the top 50 in the world in 24 specific subject areas, up from 22 last year, in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019.

Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Doune Macdonald said UQ showed significant upward jumps in the QS Subject rankings this year in Nursing (up 18 places), Sociology (up 14 places), Earth and Marine Science (up 11 places), and Anthropology, Agriculture and Forestry, Statistics and Operational Research, in which UQ rose eight places in each.

“Globally we have risen from third in 2018 to number two in Sports-Related Subjects, and from 10 th in 2018 to fifth position in Engineering - Mineral & Mining,” Professor Macdonald said.

“UQ’s other notable results in the top 50 are Anthropology (up 8); Agriculture and Forestry (up 8); Statistics and Operational Research (up 8); Earth and Marine Science (up 11); Sociology (up 14) and Nursing (up 18).

“I think we can take those results as an endorsement of UQ’s continued strong investment in research and teaching, and in weighty industry partnerships.

“Undoubtedly this strategic focus underpins UQ’s results in the 2019 QS Subjects survey.”

Professor Macdonald said UQ’s leaders were focussed on producing high-quality research with globally significant impact.

“We are committed to research excellence, and to attracting and retaining high-achieving staff and students, and responding with agility to employers’ changing needs,” she said.
