Rice Computer Science partners with Google on data science summer program

10-week program accepting applications from college students across North America

Rice University’s Department of Computer Science is partnering with Google to offer a 10-week summer undergraduate research program in data science. Funded by Google and managed by Rice, the competitive, hands-on program is open to applicants enrolled in North American colleges and universities.

"We’re very excited to partner with Google to offer this program,” said Chris Jermaine , professor and interim department chair in computer science and program director of the Rice Data Science Initiative. "Ouráplan is for (Google) to be an active participant. Students willáhave an opportunity to interact with Google on a regularábasisáto learn about their data science research.”

The Research Experience for Undergraduates in Data Science program offers students a $6,000 stipend and an opportunity to work one-on-one with Rice faculty mentors to conduct research in one of the fastest growing computational specialties. The 2021 application deadline is March 1.

Data science is a crucial area of research with significant impact on healthcare, energy, manufacturing, finance, science and other industries. It is the foundation of artificial intelligence that is used to build and train models for decision-making with applications in detection and prevention of cyberattacks, fraud and catastrophic machine failures.
