Sabine Steiner has taken over as Professor of Angiology (§98) at MedUni Vienna and Head of the Division of Angiology at MedUni Vienna’s Department of Medicine II and Vienna General Hospital at the beginning of September 2024. Steiner comes to Vienna from the University of Leipzig.

Sabine Steiner’s research focuses on all’aspects of vascular medicine, from basic research to clinical trials. She has made significant contributions to translational vascular research, including leading the vascular section of the Helmholtz Institute for Metabolism, Obesity and Vascular Research (HI-MAG) in Leipzig as well as conducting numerous studies from first-in-human to multicenter phase III trials in the field of endovascular treatment of patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Her work includes projects such as the development of a large animal model for restenosis, extensive proteomic analyses of human plaques, direct comparative studies of new drug-eluting technologies and the establishment of innovative interventional techniques. This research has contributed significantly to improving the understanding and treatment of vascular diseases and has a direct impact on patient care.

At MedUni Vienna, Sabine Steiner’s research focuses on maximizing the efficacy and safety of peripheral endovascular interventions. The aim is to improve treatment options for patients with vascular diseases. "Minimally invasive vascular interventions and vascular diagnostics represent a highly innovative medical field that is being significantly advanced through interdisciplinary collaborations with research partners from academic centers and industry, as well as through the integration of AI algorithms to analyze large amounts of data," explains Steiner. "My aim is to establish an international reference center for conservative and interventional angiology and to support both vascular medical care and research and teaching at MedUni Vienna through broad interdisciplinary collaboration," says Sabine Steiner, describing her focus. The intensive promotion of young talent is intended to arouse interest in angiology right from the undergraduate stage and enable training in the top international academic angiology field.

About the person

Sabine Steiner grew up in East Tyrol and studied medicine in Innsbruck and Vienna. She habilitated in internal medicine and became an associate professor at MedUni Vienna. An Erwin-Schrödinger Research Fellowship took her to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute in Canada, where she obtained a Master of Science in Epidemiology. She worked as a senior physician at the Department of Internal Medicine II at MedUni Vienna before moving to Leipzig University. When the Department of Angiology was founded at Leipzig University Hospital, she took over responsibility for the organization of inpatient care and worked as head of research. She was appointed to the professorship in applied vascular research and was also the lead of the vascular section at the Helmholtz Institute for Metabolism, Obesity, and Vascular Research (HI-MAG) at the Helmholtz Center Munich, in partnership with the University of Leipzig.
