Cristina Morales, PhD candidate of Linguistic, literary and cultural studies, will be representative of the Doctoral School of the University of Barcelona in the Coimbra Group “3-minute thesis’ contest, with her thesis presentation “Literary, not literally’, which presents a methodology for comparing texts relating literature to our world using displacements in texts reduced by literary resources (plot twists, allegories, dislocations) and mechanisms to create significances. Through this analysis, the thesis suggests we could trace theories about our world and the ways we exist in it, theories that induce new approaches to reality. This edition has received thirteen PhD students as participants, and the second prize has been awarded to Joan Sala, with a thesis on biomedicine.
The award ceremony took place on virtual format, on Friday, March 26, and counted on the participation of the rector, Joan Guàrdia, and the vice-rector for Doctoral Studies and Trainee Research Staff, Maria Feliu, and the director of the Doctoral School, Màrius Domínguez. Feliu highlighted the efforts on synthesis and dissemination of all participants, and Domínguez stressed the relevance of such an event, which gathers researchers from different disciplines.
After the PhD students made their presentations, the members of the jury, presided by the rector’s delegate for Scientific Dissemination, Gemma Marfany, left the Teams session and gave it a thought. Members of the jury were Carles Mancho, coordinator of Research Institute of Medieval Cultures; Carme Gonzàlez, vice-dean for Mobility and External Affairs of the Faculty of Chemistry; Neus Agell, vice-dean of Research at the Faculty of Medicine, and Raul Ramos, vice-dean of Research and Doctoral Studies at the Faculty of Economics and Business. In this edition, doctoral students who took part in the contest could vote together.
Two more calls
The Doctoral School has two open calls to represent the UB in two more contests: the Catalan Foundation for Research’s “4-minute thesis’ and CRUE’s “Your Doctoral Thesis in a Twitter Thread: #Hilotesis’. The University of Barcelona is the only university in Spain to participate in the three contests.
All the information regarding the contests is available on the website of La UB Divulga.
