What might youth-led sex and relationships education in the UK look like?
What might youth-led sex and relationships education in the UK look like? This seminar is hosted by the Centre for International Education (CIE): School-based sex and relationships education (SRE) has an important role to play in educating young people about their sexual rights, healthy relationships, sexual and relationship abuse, and sexual health. However, existing evidence suggests that young people are disengaged. Schools seldom seek the opinions of young people to inform the content or delivery of SRE, and teenagers remain sceptical about the potential of teachers to educate them about sex and relationships. In this seminar, Dr Sundaram will explore the reasons underlying young people's disengagement with SRE, and identify changes that could be made to its content, delivery and form in order to better engage youth with this vitally important subject. Her presentation is based on a study conducted with young women in the north of England about their views on school-based SRE.
