The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has hit the world population hard, spreading throughout the globe since the beginning of the year and claiming more than 450,000 victims. The entire scientific community is engaged in an unprecedented effort to curb the progression of the disease, for which no specific cure is yet available. UniversitÓ della Svizzera italiana is also contributing to this global cause through various research activities in different fields. In this context, the project "REDAC - REpositioned Drugs Against COVID-19" by Prof. Vittorio Limongelli and his research group aims at identifying, thanks to computational pharmacology, which existing drug could best defeat the virus.
Emiliano Albanese, MD PhD is a Full professor at the USI Faculty of Biomedical Sciences and Director of the Institute of Public Health. He is first, and foremost, an epidemiologist and a systematic reviewer and meta-analyst, with research and academic interests in three main, interlinked areas: dementia, aging, and global mental health. Among his many endeavours, Prof. Albanese was director of the WHO Collaborating Centre (CC) for Mental Health Research and Training in Geneva.
Federica Pedalino, a 2019 graduate from the USI Master in Communication, Management and Health , was awarded the Best student-led paper award in the Health Communication division during the recent conference of the International Communication Association (ICA), one of the most important global associations in the field of Communication Sciences.
In March 2020, the Swiss Learning Health System (SLHS), which is coordinated by the University of Lucerne, invited its partners - including USI - to think and work on ways current research efforts in Switzerland and outside of the country can be supported and strengthened to address the international COVID-19 emergency.
GovernaTI-VA is a new cross-border cooperation project between public instititutions in Lombardy and Ticino. On June 18, the Municipality of Varese, Italy, presented the project, which is conducted in collaboration with USI UniversitÓ della Svizzera italiana, the Sezione Enti Locali (SEL, the Local Authorities Office) of the Department of Institutions of the Canton Ticino, Anci Lombardia, and theá Associazione Partenariato Pubblico-Privato Svizzera (PPP Association Switzerland) . The joint effort aims at strengthening cross-border governance and create a platform for the exchange of good practices between Italy and Switzerland.
In the world ranking of universities compiled and published on June 10, 2020 by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), UniversitÓ della Svizera italiana (USI) was the highest 'new entry', ranking 273rd (together with the University of Arizona) out of 1002 selected academic institutions. USI distinguished itself for its marked internationality, both for its students - 8th rank - and for its faculty - 17th rank. á

Claudia Magrin and Martina Sola are two researchers in neuroscience and PhD students at USI. They both work at the Laboratory for biomedical neurosciences of the Ente Ospedaliero Cantonale, in the research group led by Dr. Paolo Paganetti. They are currently working on a study on the relationship between Tau and P53 proteins in response to DNA damage, published in Communications Biology, one of Nature's scientific journals. to celebrate this important milestone we turned to the two researchers to find out more about their path and their studies in the laboratory.
USI Institute for Economic Research (IRE, Faculty of Economics) covers various areas, including the study of the evolution of electricity prices in Ticino, Switzerland and the European Union. Alessandra Motz, PhD candidate at IRE, is responsible for energy market analysis for the Public Finance and Energy Observatory (O-FPE) and recently dealt with the report "The wholesale electricity market", which analyses the dynamics observed in this field during 2019 and early 2020. She offers us an interesting retrospective of what is happening in Europe with regard to energy policies and geopolitics, which also have a significant impact on the national market.
