2025 JoRISS call for Sino-French research projects

Created in 2010, the Joint Research Institute for Science and Society is a without walls research structure designed to foster scientific research collaborations in all disciplines, and with a privileged attention to the societal implications of scientific knowledge, between the East China Normal University of Shanghai and Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon as a member of the Université de Lyon (UDL). 

In 2025, Claude Bernard - Lyon 1 University and New York University in Shanghai act as associated partners of the Joriss call for research projects.

JoRISS acts primarily as:

  • an incubator for new research projects over a 1 to 2 year long period
  • a platform for long term development of projects successfully incubated within or independently of JoRISS

    All research projects must be jointly headed by at least one investigator affiliated with a Shanghai based partner of the call (East China Normal University or New York University in Shanghai) and one investigator affiliated with Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon or Complementary participation as team members of investigators from other institutions than East China Normal University, New York University in Shanghai, Claude Bernard- Lyon 1 University and Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon is possible.

    Project content

    1) Projects may be submitted under one of the 2 following content categories:

    A. Projects dealing with the 2025 priority domains:

    • Mathematics and Data Analysis
    • Societal and Ethical implications of AI

    The 15th Call is also open, without any topic limitations, to all research projects satisfying the JoRISS conditions of eligibility.

    2) General guidelines:

    • The Call is open to all disciplines.
    • Projects with an interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary perspective are encouraged.
    • Projects involving collaborations among the 2 French partners of the Call are also encouraged.

    Project type

    In contrast with previous calls, the 15th Call is limited to new incubating projects, excluding in particular applications for extension of incubating projects already funded in 2024.

    New Incubating Projects characteristics:

    • JoRISS provides up to 30 000 euros per project in seed money for the incubation of a new research project;
    • 50°/° of the funding obtained is provided to the Shanghai based members of the research project by the Shanghai based partner(s) of the Call with which the project leader(s) is or are affiliated, and 50°/° is provided to the Lyon based members of the research project by the Lyon based partner(s) of the Call with which
    • Funds can be used for a maximum period of 24 months on both sides (however, use of funds can be limited to a 12 month period in certain cases);
    • Project leaders must commit themselves to seek further subsidies from national and international funding agencies in the course of the incubating period and are also strongly encouraged to submit projects with partial funding from other sources already secured;
    • At the end of the incubating period, successfully matured projects are expected to apply to pursue their development at JoRISS with external financial support;

    - Special attention will be paid to the following criteria in the selection process :

    • Number of doctoral students involved in the project;
    • Number of high standard scientific publications authored by the investigators in the area of the project;
    • Amount of seed funding already secured;
    • Adequacy with the strategic scientific orientations of each partnering institution.

    Applicants are strongly encouraged to have a preliminary discussion about their projects with one of the JoRISS coordinators (see mails above) before submitting their application.

    o Proposals must include:

    -    the application form downloaded from the JoRISS website;
    -    a description of the project not exceeding 10 pages and including all crucial information, such as:  brief history of previous and/or existing collaborations, agenda of realization of the project, detailed list of involved investigators, specific relevance of a Sino-French cooperation, originality in the field, expected scientific and institutional impacts, long term perspectives and potential beyond incubating period;
    -    a detailed budget, specifying the breakdown of the total amount into standard category of expenses (travel, stay, instruments...) and the anticipated distribution of expenses between France-based investigators and China-based investigators;
