plane controls With Canada in need of airplane pilots, University of Waterloo researchers are using artificial intelligence (AI) to help more of them take flight. | Supported by the Government of Canada, through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), experts at the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Aeronautics (WISA) are enlisting a host of new technologies to train more licensed pilots in less time, for less money and in a more environmentally friendly way.

Risk spirals and collective ignorance
Illustration by Katalin Kántor In a new article published in the prestigious Journal of Consumer Research , USI professor Léna Pellandini-Simányi (Institute of Marketing and Communication and Management) and Michelle Barnhart (Oregon State University, School of Business) develop a new theory of how risks build up in markets over time. The paper focuses on the development of "collective ignorance": a social process through which consumers and organizations become less attentive to risks in markets, leading to a risk spiral.

Researchers from TU Delft and Brown University have engineered string-like resonators capable of vibrating longer at ambient temperature than any previously known solid-state object - approaching what is currently only achievable near absolute zero temperatures.
