The Division of Microbial Ecology (DoME) at the Centre of Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science is a creative and ambitious team that conducts internationally leading research in the field of microbial ecology.

 

We are searching for a Postdoctoral Researcher with expertise laboratory methods for ONT (Oxford Nanopore Technologies) long-read sequencing based DNA and RNA analysis and bioinformatic methods relevant to the study of microbial ecology (e.g. amplicon sequencing, metagenome and metartranscriptome analysis).

 

The position is temporary for the duration of an employee’s absence.

Your future tasks:

As Postdoctoral Researcher, the candidate will contribute to the human and environmental microbiome focused research at DoME. One of the main tasks will be the development of high throughput, sequencing-based microbiome profiling methods, as well as implementation and further development of Oxford Nanopore technology (ONT) based long read sequencing workflows. Furthermore, implementation and customization of bioinformatics workflows for the analysis of ONT data are expected.
 
The successful applicant will work in the team of the Joint Microbiome Facility of the Medical Univeristy of Vienna and the Univeristy of Vienna (JMF), and support Centre-wide efforts to standardize data curation and analysis workflows. A high level of independence and the publication of the developed workflows in international peer-reviewed journals is expected.

This is part of your profile: 

Successful candidates must have a doctoral degree in microbiology, molecular biology, bioinformatics or related disciplines, and previous experience with ONT sequencing. Previous experience in microbiome research sequencing is preferred. Experience with statistical analysis and data visualization, and with using a computational cluster including job scheduling is required. A strong affinity for methods development preferred.

 

A track record of publications in international peer-reviewed journals in accordance with the candidates’ career stage is expected.

 

Very good communication skills in English (written and spoken) are mandatory and communication skills in German are preferred. The ability to work in a team is essential.
